Glen Ivy Hot Springs Spa

“Sea Kelp in a Grotto, Please…”

Just at the base of California’s Santa Ana Mountains lies an underground grotto that redefines the word escape. It’s part of the Glen Ivy Hot Springs spa, only a few short hours from the hectic pace of urban life in Los Angeles and San Diego. A day at this oasis is guaranteed to recharge the batteries and rejuvenate. Classed among the top 24 spas in North America by the National Geographic Traveler magazine, this canyon spa has been offering relaxation since the 1860s. Today it boasts an 11-acre campus filled with exotic flowers, a total of 16 pools and spas, a full range of massage, body and facial treatments, and of course, the grotto.

Unpretentious enough so that you needn’t fret about how last season’s swimsuit fits, a day at Glen Ivy leaves you understanding the real meaning of the word Zen. You have time to work your way through the different pools: grab a floating mat and start floating in the Lounge pool; if you’re feeling more energetic do a few laps in the Lap pool; for the hopelessly romantic, experience the secluded hideaway of the Vista Spa; and a long soak in the Mineral baths prepares your skin for a trip to Club Mud.

Club Mud, the only red-clay mud bath in California, provides the unusual experience of gathering handfuls of gritty, red mineral clay from a pedestal in the middle of a thigh-high pool, and slapping it all over your body. The exfoliating properties of this mud, mined in the nearby Temescal Canyon, leave your skin feeling soft and youthful.
Unique to the Glen Ivy Hot Springs Spa is the underground Grotto adventure – a cave that you enter via an escalator. At the end of your gentle descent into the earth, you remove your bathrobe and flip-flops and advance, in your bathing suit, towards attendants who paint your body with a gooey, warm moisturizer of sea kelp and aloe vera. Half-an-hour in the Hydrating Chamber gives your body the chance to absorb the goodness of this plastering, which you then wash off with an invigorating power shower.

Need a break from water and mud? Top off the relaxing benefits of your spa treatment with an afternoon in Temecula wine country. The Temecula Valley showcases 18 wineries where you can taste sunshine in a glass. For a touch of luxury, tour the wineries by limousine, or, for a different view, glide over in a hot air balloon. If your invigorated body yearns for hiking, biking and riding trails, the area is replete with them, offering you an unhurried reentry to the reality of the real world.
