Sycamore Mineral Springs Resort
“Soaking in the Night”
What could be more romantic on a California coastal night than your own private hot tub where only the stars peeping through the Sycamore trees light the night. The setting is Sycamore Mineral Springs, where rooms with private redwood hot tubs wind up a wooded hillside path, flaunting names like Shangri La, Paradise, Xanadu, and Twilight. Lowering yourself into the steaming hot mineral water is the perfect ending to a day of gallivanting in nearby San Luis Obispo, swimming at Avila Beach, hiking amongst the sycamores, or golfing just down the road. A very long soak soothes every sore muscle before bed.
Located between Los Angeles and San Francisco off of Highway 101, Sycamore Mineral Springs is snuggled in the trees, creeks, and meadows of Avila Canyon, a short drive from San Luis Obispo and just next to the sleepy seaside town of Avila Beach. The waters are rich in sulfur compounds and trace minerals that are soothing to the respiratory system and calming to the skin. Many with joint-related pain disorders find comfort in the waters and all derive benefit from the general detoxification of a good, long soak. The Resort is committed to the art of relaxation, making an effort to integrate the healing wisdom of the East with the wellness technologies of the West. The result is a full spectrum of healing arts that run the gamut from exercise, nutrition, massage and skin care to meditation and psycho-dynamic therapies. Treatments include acupressure, aromatherapy, hypnotheraphy, the 3000-year-old Yogic System, and Ayurvedic consultations.
The waters have been gurgling up since 1886, when two men drilling for oil struck sulfur-based mineral water. Naturally hot, the sulfur spring water offered a balm of therapy and became “the” place for San Luis social gathering. The location has been the site of a hotel as far back as 1897 when the Pacific Coast Railway stopped across the street. It’s always been a welcome break for travelers en route between Los Angeles and San Francisco, and visitors to Hearst Castle have a history of coming to partake of the waters.
The springs were christened Sycamore Mineral Springs by owners in the mid-1930s who staffed the resort with doctors and nurses in an effort to cure the aches and pains of arthritis. The mid-1970s saw another shift in focus, and Sycamore Mineral Springs once again became a spa resort, refurbished to attract the many tourists traveling up and down the coast. Just recently, the 1920’s bathhouse was renovated to accommodate 10 massage rooms and two facial rooms.
A visit to San Luis Obispo is the perfect combo for a spa stay. It’s a lively college town with lots of funk and a treasure trove of trendy shops and restaurants that don’t disappoint. If you opt for the wine tasting route, there are several wineries to welcome you in the area. And if you want to enhance the benefit of the mineral waters, sporting options abound with golf, kayaking, horseback riding, and of course, the beach, all accessible.
