Hot Sulphur Springs Resort & Spa
The healing powers of the sulphur springs have lured people to their waters since they were first discovered by the Ute Indians hundreds, if not thousands, of years ago. The Ute Indians believed that the hot springs provided rejuvenating and healing qualities to their horses, bodies and land. Thus, they would bathe first themselves, then their horses and dogs, and finally the women and children in the healing waters.
The area surrounding the hot springs was named after William Byers, who was the first white man to discover the area of the hot springs. Byers named the town Hot Sulphur Springs. In turn, the neighboring bluffs surrounding the town were names Byers Canyon, after the celebrated founder.
While Byers was the first to use the hot springs as a means of gaining income, the resort of Hot Sulphur Springs soon sprang out of the foundation he built. From the time it was discovered through today, the springs have been a popular destination for family and vacation-seekers from around the world. In fact, from the 1920’s to the 1950’s, the resort had a reputation for being one of the most celebrated natural resorts in the Rocky Mountain States, from Colorado to Montana.
Comparatively recently, in 1997, the spiritual leader of the Ute tribe blessed the hot springs water with 1,000 witnesses in attendance. The blessing was a testament to the power and popularity of the waters, as acknowledged by bathers from around the world.
Today, the Hot Sulphur Springs boasts of a reputation that far surpasses other hot springs in popularity and service. They are still among the most popular resorts on the globe, as they have been since their early discovery.
The resort hosts over 21 all natural mineral pools that are not chemically treated, filtered or re-circulated at all. There are over 200,000 gallons of water that are heated from 95-112 degrees everyday. The majority of the heating is supplied by water that is part of a network of seven natural springs that flow over a volcanic rock fissure. The fissure connects directly to the volcanic rock at the Earth’s core - 35,000 feet below the Earth’s surface.
The water at Hot Sulphur Springs is entirely safe. It is filled with healthy minerals such as sodium, sulfate, chloride, silica, potassium, calcium, fluoride, and magnesium. The water is also entirely drinkable and will not harm the skin in any way.
In addition to the hot springs, visitors can enjoy spa services on the premises of the resort. Guests can choose from a menu of massage options – from a 30-minute reflexology massage to a one-hour hot stone massage to compliment their day at the hot springs. Additionally, guests can choose from a variety of top-notch spa treatments, such as herbal body wraps, hair & scalp treatments and hand masks, at competitive prices.
Guests wishing to prolong their experience at the resort can select to stay overnight in motel-style rooms or, if available, they can pay a little extra to stay in an authentic 1840’s style cabin overlooking the resort. The resort is also the ideal location for conferences, as there is a relaxing conference space on the grounds of the resort.
There are few better places on the planet for a day of relaxation and bathing. Slip into a steamy and all-natural hot spring bath for the day and finish it off with a hike around the hills of the resort or by receiving a well-deserved facial. Perhaps the best thing about the Hot Sulphur Springs is that you will be invited and even implored to relax.
